This post shows an Anthropoid Coffin from Deir el-Balah, south of Gaza, one of the cities of the Philistines. Scholars date this artifact to the 13th century BC. It demonstrates Egyptian influence reaching into the SW coast of Canaan. The patriarch Joseph may have been put in a coffin such as this.
Joseph was 30 yrs. old when he stood before Pharaoh (Gen. 41:46). His father, Jacob, stood before Pharaoh when he was 130 yrs. old (Gen. 47:9), and according to biblical chronology, this would have occurred in 1661 B.C. Jacob died 17 yrs. later (Gen. 47:28) in 1644 B.C. Joseph died at 110 yrs-old (Gen. 50:22), after ruling in Egypt for 80 years. Jacob (Israel) loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age (Gen. 37:3).
All of this together puts Joseph’s death at least 3 centuries before the time that the anthropoid coffins were created. I love your beautiful photos of the coffins showing the Egyptian influence, but I think it is unlikely that Joseph’s embalmed body was placed in a coffin like one of these.
